Treating xanthelasma

Xanthelasma treatment

What are the symptoms of having Xanthelasma and how best to treat it?

Before you seek treatment for your Xanthelasma, you need to ensure that it is accurately diagnosed by a doctor. Xanthelasma can be diagnosed by the color of the patches and its appearance around the eye area. Do keep in mind that sometimes Xanthelasma is often mistaken with other skin disorders such as Syringoma. Syringoma are commonly 1-3mm in size and appear as flesh-yellowish colored benign bumps that are caused by the overgrowth of cells from the sweat glands, and have a completely different treatment. Ensure that your Xanthelasma is correctly diagnosed.

What is the best treatment for Xanthelasma?

Once the condition has been diagnosed by a professional and diet and cholesterol levels are under control, you can start seeking a treatment for the cosmetic symptoms and yellow plaques.

There are a number of options suggested to remove and reduce the appearance of the yellow plaques, from garlic and castor oil to surgery – although, like all procedures, some of these treatments are old wife’s tales, hearsay and may have side effects.

Xanthelasma Treated with Garlic, will it work?.

Some people suggest that you rub a clove of garlic on your Xanthelasma and it may be of some benefit to your Xanthelasma.  Garlic contains two key compounds, a sulphur-rich amino acid called Allicin and a protein-based enzyme called Allinase.

is it a skin condition or xanthoma plaques?Garlic is great for minor infections and not so good at controlling viruses, but it will help some people.  Garlics’ infection and virus control comes from the Allinase enzyme. For a few people, treatment does work, as they are miss-interpreting Xanthelasma for a Staphylococcus Bacteria eye infection (Stye), See image.  Stye are puss filled painful infections that appears on the eyelids.  A good way to check is, if it is painful when squeezed, it is usually a Stye.

As our Xanthelasma medical breakdown shows, as with the more in-depth explanation of what Xanthelasma are, Xanthelasma are painless cholesterol engorged collections of cells.  Xanthelasma is neither an infection, nor a virus, hence one the keys ingredients of garlic are of little use in treatment for Xanthelasma.

Rubbing Garlic on Xanthelasma?

There are suggestions that continually rubbing Garlic on the Xanthelasma will possibly have a benefit towards Xanthelasma treatment.  This treatment is hoping to utilize the amino acid called Allicin in the Garlic. This will do nothing more than aggravate and irritate your skin. Your Xanthelasma garlic burn could make matters worse, by inducing scar tissues, forming a protective layer over the Xanthelasma plaque.

Xanthelasma Garlic Burn.

Over use will result in the garlic burning your skin, due to burning off the renewing top cell layers on each application. The Garlic may burn off a very fine layer of skin, but will usually leave you with a scar formation on that treated layer.  If you apply it again, then you are doing nothing more than disturbing the scar cells even more (unless you leave 2 months in between treatments) and you will be now burning off another layer of protection and inducing more scar cells to accumulate and form in the area to protect the skin.  Continue this treatment for a long time and it is easy to see that the negatives towards this treatment, start to out way the benefits.  There is also the danger of getting it in your eye.  The amino acids will damage the PH of the eye and cause a catalogue of problems.

Xanthoma Removal Castor Oil ?

xanthoma treatment castor oil

Xanthoma Removal Castor Oil

Natural Castor oil as a treatment for Xanthelasma ?

The Castor Oil treatment method is tried by some people, but does it work?  Castor Oil does have some small anti-bacterial properties, which come from the high levels of ricinoleic components. High cholesterol and elevated levels of triglycerides in your bloodstream increase your risk for getting heart disease or having a heart attack over time. Test result found that castor oil taken orally could for some people, slightly lower their cholesterol levels as well as their triglyceride levels. Whilst this will not remove the Xanthelasma, for a small percentage of people it has the ability to slow the process of Xanthelasma migration down.

Instead of using Castor Oil or Garlic as a form of control of your cholesterol levels, speak to your doctor.  They can prescribe statins and other forms of cholesterol control.  Taking statins will be of more benefit for cholesterol control than orally ingested Garlic or Castor Oil.

Castor Oil by its nature is a triglyceride, with 90 % of its fatty acid chains being ricinoleate. If anything, treating xanthalasma with castor oil could actually have a negative effect, as Castor oil is a source of ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid.  High levels of triglyceride are one of the causes of Xanthelasma to spread, as well as being a medical issue in its own right, so replacing one fatty acid with another will have no benefits for the vast majority of the population.  This foreign triglyceride fatty acid, ingested, has little, to no benefit to your successful Xanthelasma treatment.

xanthoma castor oil

What is Castor oil?

Castor oil is a vegetable oil that can be gotten by pressing the seeds of the castor oil plant, which is also known as the Ricinuscommunis.  Its plant is largely native to the India and Africa, while the oil is well known all over the world for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

The Castor oil is rich in minerals, proteins and vitamin E which is why it is very beneficial for a whole lot of things. Some of the benefits of the castor oil include:

What are Castor oil’s benefits?

  • It helps to increase hair growth and controls hair loss: The Castor oil carries essential fatty acid which helps in the acceleration of blood circulation to the scalp, therefore, increasing hair growth. It strengthens the scalp roots through the help of some essential nutrients like the ricinoleic acid.
  • Castor oil heals inflamed skin: The Castor oil is the perfect answer if you are looking to heal skin inflammation that can be caused by sunburns, acne, and dry skin. All you need do is to dip a cotton ball into the castor oil and apply it on the affected area.
  • It slows down signs of aging: When applied with the skin, castor oil penetrates deeply thereby stimulating the production of collagen and elastin which, in turn, helps soften and hydrate the skin.
  • It’s great for moisturizing the skin:Castor oil leaves provides you with supple, smooth, and revitalized skin. So, whenever you are looking for a cost effective natural skin moisturizer, you can make use of this oil.
  • Apply it to prevent stretchmarks:  Stretchmarks usually occurs during pregnancy when skin on the abdomen experiences drastic stretching. The more elastic your skin gets, the lesser the chances of having these marks. Castor oil is very rich in fatty acid, so when used especially during the last two months of pregnancy, it can help to prevent stretchmarks.

xanthelasma treatment castor oil

Castor Oil via Topical application for Xanthelasma.

If you are contemplating using castor oil as a topical treatment, (rubbed on your Xanthelasma), as a ‘give it a go’ option, then the following will explain why Xanthelasma treated with castor oil could actually be a bad idea. This particular fatty acid (ricinoleic acid) in Castor Oil causes it to be more easily absorbed than most fats.  You are making your body by the nature of Castor Oil ingest triglyceride fatty acids even easier.  This is the opposite for an effective fast Xanthelasma treatment.

Does it Work, will it get rid of my Xanthelasma?

The fatty acid protein makes the skin soak in the very small levels (1% and under) of the six different acids which are in the chemical makeup of Castor Oil.  As with Garlic, this will burn the top layer of skin and result in scar tissue formation.  If you damage the top layer of skin, your body produces scar tissues cells to protect the area.  If you wait every 2 months for the scar (keloid) cells to dissipate, then after a very long time, if the Xanthelasma has not spread too much, then you will get to a point where you are soaking in to your skin high levels of triglyceride fatty acids, to destroy triglyceride and cholesterol fatty acids.  There are also very inherent risks with getting Castor Oil in your eye.  As with garlic, the acids will damage the PH of the eye and cause a catalogue of problems.

Xanthelasma Freezing ?

how to get rid of xanthomas

Xanthelasma Freezing

Using Liquid nitrogen to remove Xanthelasma?

While it may seem to defy common sense, liquid nitrogen therapy has been put forward as a possible treatment for freezing xanthelasma in the recent past. Liquid nitrogen treatment is called Cryo-ablation, and you will see this option come up from time to time. That said, the dangers and disappointing results were gathered, and this drastic treatment has lost favor – it is simply too dangerous, destructive and the results are impossible to predict.

What is Cryo-ablation?

Cryo-ablation is the use of extreme cold in order to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue and cells. In this treatment, a liquid nitrogen preparation is applied to the skin in order to rupture the cell walls.  The liquid nitrogen also causes damage to the micro-vascular circulation, which results in secondary anoxia and haemorrhagic necrosis. Ideally, this will damage and kill the offending cells and solve the problem.

Cryo-ablation is similar to acute frostbite.  Due to its intense delivery and dramatic results, this form of skin treatment is best left for large areas of skin, and can be of is benefit for wrinkle control and skin resurfacing.  As a treatment option for Xanthelasma, it is far too dangerous and the negatives greatly outweigh the positives.

What is Liquid Nitrogen?

xanthoma freezing treatment techniques

Liquid nitrogen is nitrogen in a liquid state at an extremely low temperature. It is a colorless clear liquid with 0.807 g/ml density, a boiling point of −195.79 °C and a dielectric constant of 1.43.

It is used for different purposes, such as a coolant for computers, in medicine to remove pre-cancerous cells and in cryogenics, where scientists study the effect of very cold temperatures on materials.

The Liquid nitrogen is also known to be used in top restaurants as a method used to instantly freeze food and drinks, or create an impressive cloud of vapour or fog (when exposed to air).

Obtained from the atmosphere, liquid nitrogen is inexpensive and rarely gets refrigerated. It is stored in insulated containerswhich are vented to prevent pressure build-up- called Dewars and allowed to boil away. Since it is boiling, most of the liquid nitrogen used in laboratories and in cryogenics shows is at a temperature of 77.2 K.

What is liquid nitrogen regularly used for?

The liquid nitrogen, due to its low reactivity and low temperature, is used for various activities. Some of its application includes:

  • Cryotherapy when removing cancer.
  • Freezing and transportation of food products.
  • Cryopreservation of biological samples like eggs, sperm, and animal genetic samples.
  • Coolant for computers, vacuum pumps, and other equipment.
  • Preventing of materials from oxygen exposure.
  • Quick freezing of water or pipes to make working on them easy when valves aren’t available.
  • As a source of very dry nitrogen gas.
  • For branding cattle.
  • Cooling materials to enable easier machining or fracturing.
  • Science projects like freezing of flowers, liquid nitrogen ice cream, and then watching them shatter when tapped onto a hard surface to make nitrogen fog.

xanthoma freezing treatment

Is Liquid Nitrogen a recommended treatment for Xanthelasma?

Simply put, the answer to the above question is a resounding ‘no.’Cryo-ablation destroys all of the cells that it comes into contact with, and so this can be likened to treating a splinter with a hammer – the resulting injury will be worse than the original problem. In the case of liquid nitrogen and Xanthelasma, the Cryo-ablation technique can penetrate right through the eyelid, and can cause painful and dangerous freeze burns on the eyeball. Do not risk your vision – this is a risky treatment option.

Because of the way that liquid nitrogen destroys the cell walls of both the Xanthelasma cells and the adjoin healthy cells; the Xanthelasma can leech to the skin nearby. In addition, Cryo-ablation can cause hyper-pigmentation (in which the area turns black) or hypo-pigmentation (where the skin has no pigment and turns white). Your initial desire to be rid of the Xanthelasma can result in a huge increase to the affected area – don’t risk trying this treatment.

Xanthelasma treatment laser ?

xanthoma laser removal

Xanthelasma Laser Removal

Can lasers be a safe treatment for Xanthelasma removal?

Xanthelasma laser treatment is very dangerous and is not a recommended treatment for Xanthelasma removal, even if you are utilizing the skill of a doctor or surgeon.  The possible Xanthelasma treatment utilises the same concepts as electrolysis in regards of cellular cauterization, but its destructive nature will also explode surrounding cell walls.

A Ruby laser or ND-yag Q-switch laser would be the only applicable laser to use, if at all, (but Xanthelasma removal with any laser is not recommended).  Both lasers are incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands.  A Ruby laser would atomize the top layer of skin and continue to burn the Xanthelasma.  The very small layer of skin, which is behind the Xanthelasma, is also vaporized, in all but the most specialized of hands.

how much does xanthoma removal cost?

What Is an Nd-Yag Laser?

A laser works by radiating a wavelength of high energy light.  Its wavelength is measured in nanometres (nm).

The ND: YAG Laser, which stands for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet Laser, is a crystal that is used as a lasing medium for solid-state lasers. It is a solid-state laser in which Nd: YAG is used as a laser medium.

These lasers have many different functions in the medical and scientific field for processes such as Lasik surgery and laser spectroscopy. The Nd: YAG laser is a four-level laser system- which means that the four energy levels are involved in laser action. These lasers operate in two modes which is the pulsed and continuous mode.

xanthelasma co2

Is it really a viable treatment for my Xanthelasma?

A ND-yag Q-switch laser will possibly circumvent the destruction of the top layer of skin due to it being set within the parameters of the same light frequency of your skin, but due to the thinnest of the eyelid and the harshness of the treatment, the top layer of skin usually suffers from exposure and thus risks infection.  The energy of the laser shots obliterates anything in its path on a cellular level.  Firing a laser aimed at your Xanthelasma, which most times, has the back of your eye in its path, is never a good idea.  The strength of a ND yag Q-Switch laser is so that legally across the world, you have to wear glasses to operate them.  If a beam of laser, even for a Nano second goes through the eyelid or is exposed to the eyeball, then the resulting damage is in most time irreversible.  A damaging laser shot in the eye is that quick that you do not even have time to blink.  You blink at a 1/3 of a second, a ND Q-switch, fires at 6-10 pulses a second.

So is Xanthelasma removal with a laser a good idea?

ND yag q-switch lasers are used to cut metal, so your eyelid and plaque thickness has no real stopping power over the laser.  You could use an eyeball cup, where a piece of titanium in the shape of your eye fits over your eyeball.  The issues with this technique would be that the laser beam has the potential to be ricocheted behind the eye.  The laser causes explosions in the cellular wall, but most of its penetrating power aims downwards through your eyelid.  The cellular liquidation is a recipe for Xanthelasma regrowth, your skin changing colours and there is potential for a lot of scarring.  This technique for Xanthelasma removal is not a recommendation for a safe treatment.  Lasers and eyes should never mix.

Xanthelasma Electrolysis ?

electrolysis and xanthoma removal

Xanthelasma Electrolysis?

While electrolysis can be a very effective treatment for hair removal and scar reduction, but its use as a remedy for Xanthelasma is not usually recommended by skin care experts. Most patients find that Electrolysis as a treatment for Xanthelasma removal is very invasive, time consuming and not very successful.

xanthelasma electrolysis 1What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution containing ions. It can be used in the removal of hair roots by the application of heat using an electric current.

Electrolysis can be used to remove individual hairs from the face or body. Today’s medical electrolysis devices destroy the growth center of the hair with chemical or heat energy.

There are three different methods used to apply electrolysis. These are:

  • Galvanic electrolysis
  • Thermolysis or Short Wave Electrolysis
  • Blend Electrolysis

The main aim of using any of the methods is to damage the core of the growing hair in order to cut off the blood supply and nutrition to the hair, preventing any form of growth from developing.

So, how does it work?

The different methods of electrolysis have their different ways of working. Here are the ways the various methods work:

Galvanic electrolysis

This method uses a Direct Current (DC) of electricity. When the needle is inserted, the electricity that comes down the needle causes the salt and water in the skin to be chemically altered. The combination of salt, water and electricity produces a small amount of sodium hydroxide. If produced enough, this solution can effectively damage the cells that cause hair growth.

Thermolysis or Short Wave Electrolysis

The thermolysis method, also known as the short wave, works by using an Alternating Current (AC) of electricity. This current causes the water molecules in the skin around the needle to vibrate and this creates heat. If enough heat is created, it can damage the cells that cause hair growth.

Blend Electrolysis

The Blend Method combines the procedure of both the Short Wave and Galvanic. During this process, sodium hydroxide is created and is then heated by the electricity. This heat and the chemical solution, then destroys the hair tissue.

Electrolysis is very effective for hair removal, but it falls short with Xanthelasma removal.

Xanthelasma Removal with Electrolysis

While electrolysis is sometimes listed as a potential treatment or cure for Xanthelasma, it is not a particularly effective solution, and can actually make matters worse.

In order to have electrolysis for Xanthelasma, a practitioner inserts a needle into your eyelid and then heats the needle, repeating this process for up to 15 minutes. At this point, the cautery aspect of the treatment makes the plaque appear shrivelled and scorched. While it may look like it is retreating, the Xanthelasma will not go away so easily.

xanthelasma electrolysis costs

The risks of treating Xanthelasma with electrolysis

In healthy skin cells, the electrolysis micro current will burst the cells walls with intense heat that is designed to make healthy cells regrow again.  Cholesterol, one of the main ingredients in your Xanthelasma plaque, has a much higher tolerance to heat and electricity, and this can skew the results.

When Xanthelasma is treated by electrolysis, the cholesterol can induce denser packing of the lipids, reducing the extent of both membrane electro-proration and electro-elongation of the vesicles and potentially leading to cell wall separation.  Essentially, you are shrivelling up the outer structure of the Xanthelasma, only to watch it slowly reform over time, and when they do return, the resulting plaques will be harder to remove.

So will it work?

While results from treating Xanthelasma with electrolysis may look promising at first, you will end up disappointed and out a lot of money.

Don’t risk infection and larger Xanthelasma plaques reforming – stay away from electrolysis and invest in a more affordable and more effective treatment.

Tca for Xanthelasma ?

tca for xanthelasma

Xanthelasma TCA ?

Using Tca to treat Xanthelasma, is it effective and what are the dangers?

Xanthelasma Tca treatment is very similar to Xanthelasma treated with liquid nitrogen.  The Tca is applied by some doctors to destroy the cell walls of both healthy and mutated cells. Your Xanthelasma would be treated in a doctor’s office or similar and is a painful process.  Doctors are moving away from this form of treatment, as have individuals, due to the Xanthelasma, in as up to 95% of cases returning, also due to the aggressive nature of the Xanthelasma tca treatment.

Destruction of the cell walls is achieved by the corrosive nature of the industrial acid.  There is no cellular deformation but a more, extreme cellular liquidation. The Tca initially is non-soluble until it reaches 20 degrees centigrade, then it starts to mix with the water in the cells.  When it reaches the standard 37 degrees centigrade of the patient, it is at full penetrating corrosion, liquidizing everything around it.  This complete 180-degree liquidation will be enhanced by the reaction of the acid with the water in the cell, making it strengthen until it is too strong to support its own chemical makeup and it dissipates.

tca peel for xanthelasma

Xanthelasma Tca Removal Post Treatment

As the treated area heals, the cell walls strengthen to overcome the destruction. The healing cell encapsulates Xanthelasma into the forming cells, making for a denser deep plaque. On return the plaque is also carrying keloid scar tissue elements, so a more resilient plaque forms but in a lot more different areas.  The returning Xanthelasma can appear anywhere around the outer edges of the treated area.  Scar tissue and hyper / hypopigmentation risks are a very high due to the uncontrolled destruction of the treatment. The treatment will migrate the Xanthelasma away from the destroyed scarred treated area and the ongoing multiple follow up treatments will be chasing the problem around your eyelids.  Each treatment leaving scars in its wake. The result is called the Koebner phenomenon.

Isn’t Tca very dangerous?

Your skin is delicate.  It may with stand the lumps and bumps of life but Xanthelasma removal with Tca is dangerous.  The Tca approach is uncontrollable, trying to use Tca to treat a multitude of Xanthelasma treatment variables, will lead to more complications.  Though it may work for a very small percentage of the population with the exact skin structure to support such an aggressive technique, the fact that the clients return rate for enhanced issues from the treatment are too high to justify the treatment.  There are also the obvious health issues arising from having a very corrosive chemical so close to you eye.  Upon the Tca reaching your eyes, the acid would strengthen and cause a lot of damage, with the potential of even blinding you.

Xanthelasma Surgery ?

Xanthelasma Removal Surgery

Is surgery my only option and how much does it cost?

Xanthelasma surgery is a sure fire way to get rid of Xanthelasma and a lot of money. For the vast majority of people, who commit to getting their Xanthelasma treated in this method will be Xanthelasma free.  Most doctors will elect to perform Xanthelasma removal surgery if the Xanthelasma plaque is so large that it is distorting the eyelid.  If the eyelid is to the point of distortion, then you have a very bad Xanthelasma problem.  If there is no infringement on your ability to see, then you will end up paying to get this treatment done by a plastic surgeon.

surgery for xanthoma

Why does Xanthelasma surgery cost so much?

Surgeries in general are very expensive and most people wonder why this is so. There are some costs running behind the scenes, that the patients are not aware of and there are additional fees that are not obvious.

Some of the reasons for the expensive Xanthelasma surgery fee include:

  • Physician Fees: Xanthelasma surgery usually involves the services of at least one expert physician. For your treatment, you would have one surgeon performing the procedure, and an anaesthesia provider. These people usually submit their own bill for their service.

  • Fees for operation room: Regardless of where your surgery is being carried out, be it a hospital or a plastic surgery centre, you have to pay for the space used. You would notice that hospitals tend to cost more when compared to surgery centres.

  • Recovery Fees: Asides from the operating room used, you also have to pay for the space you make use of during the recovery time and the care received during this time.

  • Consultation by Physicians: This is usually unknown to most patients. Whenever surgeons or any other physicians who are participating in your care check in on you during your recovery process, an additional fee is usually generated.

  • Drugs: Usually, drug related fees include pain killers which are given to cope with post-surgical pain and antibiotics to prevent infections.

So what are the Xanthelasma surgery costs?

The pricing structure ranges from £1900 to a hefty £3200.  A plastic surgeons’ bill always come will many zeros.

surgery costs

Xanthelasma Removal Surgery.

It is a very invasive treatment and you will be committing a lot of time to both the treatment and the subsequent healing process.  The Xanthelasma removal is carried out with a local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic. A general anaesthetic is highly recommended so the doctor can cut the plaque from your eyelids safely.  The images of someone coming towards your eye with a scalpel and cutting through your eye lid, is one you should be fast asleep for.  The consultant will incise the whole of the Xanthelasma out, cutting slightly larger than is needed area to make sure to pick up any residing hybridized cells.  Due to the whole of the Xanthelasma plaque being cut out in one, this greatly reduces the Xanthelasma returning.

Are there negatives towards surgery?

The negatives towards this process, is the price, the downtime and the scar from the scalpel.  The skin is glued back together with a medical grade Cyanoacrylate, (super glue) and there will be a hypo-pigmented line where the incisions were made.  The downtime comes from the hospital surgery and the follow up return appointments. The inherent dangers associated with a general anaesthetic is also to be part of the equation in determining if this process is for you.
